Family, Friends, Colleagues, Artists, Art supporters!
You may remember in 2008 when I went to Algeria and created a physical theater style show with 7 young women in Bejaia based on three Kabyle folktales? I always wanted to create a similar show in Minnesota. There are folktales in the Kabyle tradition that are spicy! Sexy! Swashbuckling! This summer I am presenting a show with an awesome team that blends three Kabyle folktales that have always intrigued me.
The composer/music director Aaron Gabriel and I received a Jerome Travel/Study grant and flew off to Paris and Algeria this past May and gathered music samples and inspiration that will be a part of the show. I've always admired how director Ryan Underbakke takes our physical training from the Lecoq school to a new level, so I convinced him to sign on. The performers are all people I have followed, envied and been captivated by on stage (yes yes one of them is my husband.) Special thanks to the MN State Arts Board for awarding me a (2nd!) Artist Initiative Grant.
This is North Africa. We are a mix of language and culture and history. This is the only way I know to combat fear of the other and Islamophobia. Make art. Share stories. Reach out.
I hope you can come!
